Europe

Alberta has a rich European heritage. Over 80% of Albertans can trace their ancestry back to countries in Europe.

Alberta has developed many long-standing economic and cultural links to these countries, and has established international offices in the United Kingdom and Germany.

Europe is Alberta's second largest source of foreign direct investment, and third most important regional export destination.

International and Intergovernmental Relations (IIR) is responsible for investment attraction, trade development, and government to government relations in Europe.

IIR represents and advises on Alberta’s interests with regard to foreign governments; manages Alberta's twinning relationships with international jurisdictions, including Russia (Tyumen Oblast, Khanty-Mansii, and Yamal-Nenets), Germany (Saxony), and Ukraine (Ivano-Frankivsk and Lviv); provides support for the Advisory Council on Alberta-Ukraine Relations (ACAUR); and coordinates inbound programs for visiting dignitaries.
